ISLAND OF KYUSHU

The island of Kyushu
Kyushu is the southwestern Japanese archipelago with a total population of about 15 million. There are 7 prefectures in Kyushu; Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima. Okinawa is the tropical wonderland south of mainland Kyushu. Every prefecture has its own uniqueness but Kyushu is well known for its hospitality, warm climate, and rich history.

九州は福岡・大分・佐賀・長崎・熊本・鹿児島・宮崎の7県からなり、人口約1,500万人の日本列島西南部に位置する四大島の一つです。沖縄は九州の南に位置するトロピカルワンダーランドです。それぞれの県に個性や特徴がありますが、概して九州は、人々の情が厚く、温暖な気候で、深い歴史を持つ島として知られています。

Fukuoka Prefecture

Fukuoka is the economic and social hub of Kyushu and has a plethora of bars, restaurants, and shopping to cater to your every whim. Fukuoka is the mecca of Kyushu and if you want to go, be prepared to eat whatever you want and dance until the sun comes up. The centre of all Fukuoka is based on the trifecta of Tenjin, Daimyo, and Nakasu. Tenjin, Fukuoka is amassed with shopping centres like IMS and Tenjin Core, and the amount of restaurants and bars are plentiful to say the least. Daimyo, Fukuoka is connected to the Tenjin area and is growing strong with small shops, restaurants, and bars all over the place. Daimyo is blessed with small shops nestled in small streets and bustling with young people looking for good deals. Nakasu, Fukuoka is aimed at the older ‘gentlemen,’ or people with some extra money to spare. The area is riddled with bars and other extra-curricular places. Nakasu is home to Canal City (massive shopping centre) and some of the best yatai (outdoor food stalls) in Kyushu, most of them lining the Naka river. Your safest bet is to stay in Tenjin or Daimyo and eat, dance, and drink to your heart’s content. Come to Fukuoka and taste Fukuoka travel, Fukuoka sightseeing, Fukuoka restaurants, Fukuoka bars and clubs and Fukuoka History.

福岡は九州のメッカ。経済・エンターテイメントの中心地で、数多くのバー、レストラン、ショッピングスポットがあり、来る人の欲求を満たしてくれます。福岡に来る時はいつでも美味しいものが食べられるようにお腹をすかせ、朝まで踊り続ける覚悟で来て下さい。
福岡の中心は天神、大名、そして中洲。天神はイムズ、天神コアなどのショッピングセンターが密集し、何といってもレストランやバーの数が豊富です。天神から歩いてすぐの大名は小さなショップやレストラン、バーがあちこちにあり、これから益々人気が出てくるエリアです。小さな通りに沢山のショップが並ぶこのエリアでは、安くて個性的な物を求める若者で賑わっています。中洲は中高年の｢紳士｣もしくは｢裕福な大人｣の集うエリアで、バーなどが散在します。また、中洲には巨大ショッピングモール・キャナルシティもあり、川沿いには九州で最も有名な屋台が並ぶことでも有名です。安全な遊び方としては、やはり天神でショッピングや食事を楽しみ、心行くまで踊ったり飲んだりすることをお勧めします。

Kagoshima Prefecture

Kagoshima has possibly the greatest cityscape when looking away to the island volcano of Sakuragima. Sakurajima in Kagoshima is best viewed from afar but you should not resist the urge to take the island tour and see her close-up and personal. After that a nice traditional Kagoshima ‘sand bath’ is recommended, where you get covered in smoldering volcanic sand! Kagoshima, with a funky city centre and a tropical atmosphere make dining and dancing a unique experience in Kagoshima. Most of the Kagoshima nightlife action is found in Tenmonkan area, and for some late night fun check out the reggae bar called Namusete or the blues bar with a heavy name T-Bone. For some nice Kagoshima food try heading to Akachochi, Zabon Ramen, or Roman Yukata. Kagoshima hotels include the Ijinkan Hotel, Silk Inn Hotel, and Kagoshima Hegashida Hotel. Kagoshima, often overlooked, shouldn't be missed. Stay and enjoy the Kagoshima sightseeing, Kagoshima culinary delights, and Kagoshima nightlife.

鹿児島県（Kagoshima Prefecture）
鹿児島には桜島という火山があり、その景観は見事なものです。桜島は遠くから見る眺めが一番美しいと言われていますが、近くで見てみたいという衝動に駆られたら足を伸ばしてみるのも良いでしょう。その後は、火山砂をかぶる砂蒸し風呂をお勧めします。街の中心部は南国の雰囲気が漂い、独特の食事やナイトライフを楽しませてくれます。ナイトライフの中心となるのは天文館エリアで、レゲエバーのナマステやブルースバー・T-Boneが有名です。お勧めのお食事処は赤ちょうちん、ざぼんラーメン、Roman Yukata。宿泊なら異人館ホテル、シルクインホテル、鹿児島林田ホテルなどがあります。

Kumamoto Prefecture

Kumamoto and the massive active volcanic caldera of Aso has incredible views and unbelievable hot springs. Kurokawa, located in the Kumamoto countryside, is probably the most intense hot spring experience you can have in Kyushu, not to mention having some of the best natural surroundings. Kumamoto city also boasts a great night scene, an energy that is only second to Fukuoka. The most famous place for Kumamoto international bar/club action is at the Sanctuary, with polar atmospheres in the upper and lower sections. Other international places in Kumamoto city include Green, Shark Attack, and Jeff’s World Bar. For Kumamoto food then you can try out the Maharao or Yoronotaki restaurants, not too pricey and a good dining experience. For some Kumamoto history you should not miss Kumamoto castle and its surroundings, set right in the heart of Kumamoto city. Kumamoto Suizenji Garden is a nice replete from modernity but can is best toured in late spring or early fall. The great Aso volcano is spectacular but don’t get your hopes up, you can’t get the same views of a crater as you would in Hawaii but nonetheless the sheer size and area that is worth the trip alone. Be sure to include Kumamoto on your tour.

熊本県（Kumamoto Prefecture）
熊本は世界一のカルデラ活火山・阿蘇から見る最高の景色、そして素晴らしい温泉に恵まれています。九州で温泉を体験するならまずは黒川。自然に囲まれた最も人気のある温泉エリアです。
市内のナイトシーンはとてもエネルギッシュで福岡に次いで充実しています。外国人が集まるバーとして有名なのは、洗練された雰囲気と怪しさがミックスするSanctuary。その他、Green、Shark Attack、Jeff’s World Barなどのバーがあります。お食事ならMaharao や養老の滝がお勧め。お手頃価格で美味しい料理が楽しめます。歴史的観光名所・熊本城を訪れるのもお忘れなく。市内中心部にあるのでアクセスも便利です。水前寺公園は情緒漂う日本庭園で春や秋には見事な景色が楽しめます。
阿蘇山は壮大な火山です。ただ、ハワイのクレーターのような景色を期待してはいけません。それでも、その雄大さは一度訪れる価値があるでしょう。

Miyazaki Prefecture

Miyazaki has some of the best beaches beyond the sands of Okinawa, not to mention the hoards of people in love with finding the perfect Kyushu wave. A lot of those surfers can be found in Kanegahama in Miyazaki even though the waves are not quite what Aussies, Kiwis, Hawaiians, or Californians would be impressed by. Miyazaki city has a southern feel and it can be seen on the palm lined streets and dining atmosphere. Try out Miyazaki's Suginoko restaurant as well as the Phoenix hotel for some good food at good prices. Going out after the sun sets in Miyazaki you might best head to Studio 505 or Loose for good tunes, and maybe try out the Suntory shot bar, an okay place for inexpensive drinks. Miyazaki is a place to relax, enjoy the Miyazaki coastline, and take in Miyazaki's majestic nature.

宮崎県（Miyazaki Prefecture）
宮崎には沖縄に匹敵する美しいビーチがあります。九州で最高の波を求めて多くのサーファー達が集うのは言うまでもありません。オーストラリア、ニュージーランド、ハワイ、カリフォルニア出身者には少々物足りないかもしれませんが、金ヶ浜は人気のサーフィンポイントです。
宮崎市は南国ムードがあり、道路に沿って椰子の木が植えられており、食事も古里料理の｢杉の子｣や、ちょっと高価ですがフェニックスホテルでは素晴らしい料理が堪能できます。夕日が落ちたらStudio505やLooseで音楽を楽しみ、サントリーショットバーでリーズナブルなドリンクを飲むのもよいでしょう

Nagasaki Prefecture

The beautiful city of Nagasaki is known for its role in opening Japan to the outside world and it s unfortunate fate in the second world war. There is much to see in Nagasaki and the bar scene is beginning to expand and provide greater variety to the international community. One of the newest places in Nagasaki City is Step Above, and depending on the night you could walk into anything from a live concert to a Hip Hop event. Ayer’s Rock is a basement bar with a variety of music on tap. Kirin is a relatively mellow scene set in a jungle-like atmosphere. If in Shianbashi alley check out Albert’s barfor a few drinks. Head to Chris’ Pizza bar for a superb pizza, quickly becoming a famous restaurant in Nagasaki. For a little Jazz then maybe take a peek at Goody Goody. Some other recommended restaurants in Nagasaki are Kowloon restaurant and Tivoli restaurant. Obviously Nagasaki's Peace Park is a sobering and necessary experience for all, but there is also Dutch and Chinese history marked by Houstenbos and little China town. For a little tranquility, relax at Glover Garden for a few hours or so. As for getting some sleep there are a lot of pensions and cheap Japanese style hotels in Nagasaki called ‘ryokans’ and they are probably the best way to spend a visit in the Nagasaki area.

長崎県（Nagasaki Prefecture）
美しい街・長崎は、鎖国時代に唯一の海外交易の地として、また第二次世界大戦の被爆地として知られています。長崎には観光名所がたくさんあり、外国人コミュニティー向けのバーもどんどん増えています。最新スポットのひとつStep Aboveでは曜日ごとにライブやヒップホップイベントが楽しめます。Ayer’s Rockは地下にあるバーでバラエティに富んだ音楽が人気。キリンはジャングルのような雰囲気で落ち着つける場所です。思案橋通りなら、Albert’s barで食事やお酒を楽しむもよし、Chris’ Pizza barで美味しいピザに舌鼓を打つもよし。ジャズが聞きたくなったらGoody Goodyへ。他、KowloonやTivoliもお勧めレストランです。
戦争の傷跡を目の当たりにし、誰もが厳粛な気持ちになる平和公園には必ず足を運んで欲しいものです。また、長崎には、ハウステンボス、チャイナタウンのようにオランダ、中国の歴史や文化を物語る場所もあります。グラバー邸をゆっくりと散歩すれば、きっと心も穏やかになるでしょう。
ペンションやリーズナブルな旅館がたくさんあるので小旅行には最適です。

Oita Prefecture

Oita is most famous for onsens, fugu, and a lot of natural outdoor activities. Oita also has a friendly feel and well-knit foreign community that make it great for a night on the town or a trip to the countryside. If you are looking for the ultimate Japanese shrine in Kyushu, then head to Usa Jingu in the north-eastern edge of Oita prefecture. And for those hot spring lovers, Oita is heaven. Some of the best hot springs are found in relatively unknown places but your best bet is to visit Yufuin, Beppu or Kugu mountain, all located in Oita prefecture. If you are in Beppu, however, be sure to go up into the mountain areas and stay away from the city center. Oita City is often overlooked in tour books and magazines, but it can be a lot of fun, especially in the core restaurant, bar, and club district that is called Miyako machi. Be sure to stop in at P.E.I. Pub for Canadian and Japanese style cuisine and atmosphere, hear some live music foreign and Japanese bands alike at Gaucho, and have a dance at the shady but fun club called Cool Bananas. Don’t forget to find a place with the ever famous fugu (blowfish), it is one of those rare foods that you must try and it can be found in many a shops on the streets of Oita.

大分県（Oita Prefecture）
大分は何といっても温泉とふぐが有名。アウトドアアクティビティーも盛んです。県全体がフレンドリーな雰囲気で、外国人コミュニティも団結しているためナイトライフや郊外への小旅行も楽しめます。九州で最も由緒ある神社を訪れるなら大分北東部・宇佐神宮へ。また、大分は温泉好きにはたまらないエリア。秘湯と呼ばれる温泉も多いようですが、確実なのは湯布院、別府、九重でしょう。別府では市街地から足を伸ばして山の手に行ってみましょう。
大分市はガイドブックや雑誌ではあまり取り上げられていませんが、楽しめる場所はたくさんあります。特にレストランやバー、クラブが集中する都町は必見。カナダ＆和の料理・雰囲気を味わうならP.E.I. Pub、外国人・日本人バンドによる生演奏を楽しむならガウチョへ。踊りたい貴方はクラブ・クールバナナへ。大分ではあちらこちらにふぐ料理屋を見かけるはずです。せっかく大分に行ったなら是非トライして頂きたいものです。

Saga Prefecture

Saga is rather small and quaint, most famous for its annual balloon festival and pottery products from Arita. The Saga nightlife is okay if you know where to go, and the culinary delights are bountiful. Saga is just a short hop from Fukuoka, and therefore a good many of the Saga locals head to Fukuoka if they can get a day or two off from work. Enjoy the beautiful Saga pottery and countryside.

佐賀県（Saga Prefecture）
佐賀は、どちらかというと小さくて風情のある場所です。バルーンフェスタや有田焼・伊万里焼などの陶器でも有名。美味しい食材は豊富ですが、ナイトライフはどこか行きつけの店があった方が良いでしょう。福岡にも近く、佐賀の人は週末や休日を利用して気軽に来福しています。
